Tricks to cut down data costs and save cash

Turn off Data roaming when travelling overseas

By turning off the data roaming feature on your device, you can save yourself from incurring the wrath of your ISP’s charges. Enabling this feature restricts the background apps from causing a nasty bill shock when you return.

For Android: Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Networks > Data Roaming

For IOS: Settings > General > Network > Data Roaming

Turn off Autoplay

Most Social media sites play video content automatically even without downloading them.

Facebook uses autoplay on videos in your newsfeed which can ravage through data in no time. Turning this feature off is easy enough by following these few steps:

For iPhone: Within the app tap on More>Account Settings>Videos and Photos>Auto-play on WiFi only

For Android: Within the app go to App Settings>Videos play automatically>WiFi only

Twitter is set to introduce autoplay in the near future.

Turn off automatic software updates

Turn off automatic software updates. This is very useful especially when you are near your set data cap.

Check your settings whenever you update your phone.

Sometimes software updates change your user settings. A great example of this would be some of the iOS updates, which currently include a patch to automatically switch Bluetooth ‘on’. It’s a good idea when you update your software to check your default settings as they may change.
